BOTOX® & Dermal Fillers
Our Aesthetic Services
Dr. Wyse administers BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dermal Fillers in the office. She will take the time to talk to you about your areas of concern and how best to provide a more youthful yet very natural appearance. As an ophthalmologist, her knowledge of facial anatomy and extensive surgical experience are major assets in performing these treatments.
BOTOX®
The use of BOTOX® for cosmetic purposes was discovered by chance by an ophthalmologist who was treating eyelid spasms. She noticed the softening of lines and wrinkles in the treated areas. BOTOX® is now widely used for facial rejuvenation. Lines in the forehead area, around the eyes, “bunny lines” at the side of the nose, frown lines between the brows, the chin crease, and fine lines along the upper and lower lip border are some of the areas that can be treated in our office. Over time even deeper lines tend to fade. Effects start after just a few days and last 3 to 4 months. Administration of Botox® takes just a few minutes, with minimal discomfort (a slight sting). There is no downtime.
Frequently Asked Questions (Botox®)
Who will evaluate me during my Botox® appointment?
Dr. Wyse evaluates each patient to discuss specific areas of concern to that individual. Generally photographs of the patient’s face are taken so that the doctor and patient can review the specific goals of the patient looking at the photographs together.
Who administers Botox® injections in the practice?
Dr. Wyse personally performs all of the Botox® and filler injections.
Is Botox® administration painful?
No, there is a slight sting with injection, but we offer all patients numbing cream which we apply for several minutes prior to treatment. This makes the treatment virtually painless for most patients.
How Long is Recovery After Botox®?
We ask that you not press or rub the treated area on the day of treatment (though you can wash your face or apply makeup gently). We ask that you do not work out or lie down for 4 hours after treatment. Otherwise there are no restrictions and there is no downtime.
How quickly does Botox® work?
Effects are seen at 2 to 3 days after treatment.
How long do the effects of Botox® last?
Effects last 3 to 4 months. For patients who have been getting injections regularly, generally the time between treatments can be extended to 4 to 6 months.
What are the side effects of Botox®?
Since the effects wear off after 3 to 4 months, any side effect wears off by then as well. The main concern is Botox® that is injected to close to the muscles that control the lids. This can result in a droopy lid or reduced ability to close the lids. As ophthalmologists trained in the administration of Botox®, our doctors are particularly attentive to this area of concern.
What areas can be treated with Botox®?
Forehead lines
Brows- Botox® can help lift the brows, especially in combination with filler
Glabella- the lines between the eyebrows
Crow’s feet- the wrinkles at the outer corners of the eyes
Bunny lines- the wrinkles at the sides of the upper nose
Chin- to smooth chin crease and dimpling/irregularity of the chin, and to elongate the face
Below the outer mouth corners – to help lift a downturned mouth (usually in combination with filler)
Lips- tiny amounts of Botox® help smooth vertical lip lines just above and below lips
Who is an Ideal Candidate for Botox® injections?
There are a few rare neurologic diseases that would prevent the use of Botox®. Consultation with Dr. Wyse can determine if you are a candidate for Botox®.
How much does Botox® treatment cost?
The cost of treatment depends on the amount of Botox® that is used (the number of Botox® units). This depends upon what areas of the face are treated, the anatomy of the individual, and the effect desired by the patient. During a consultation, Dr. Wyse will help the patient decide on a treatment plan and discuss the number of Botox® units needed.

Dermal Fillers
We use a variety of dermal fillers including Juvéderm® Ultra XC, Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC, Juvéderm Voluma® XC, Juvéderm Volbella® XC, and Juvederm Vollure™ XC.These products consist of hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring substance in the skin. Hyaluronic acid delivers nutrients, helps the skin retain moisture and softness, and adds volume. With age, the facial tissues experience volume loss. Restoring this volume with dermal fillers helps restore a youthful appearance. Because the dermal fillers contain a local anesthetic, and we use additional topical or local anesthetic, there is minimal discomfort with filler injections. There may occasionally be mild, temporary bruising that can be covered with concealer, but otherwise, there is no downtime. Depending upon the type of dermal filler used, results can last 6 months to up to 2 years. Dr. Wyse emphasize a natural appearing result with dermal fillers. We are experienced in treating both men and women of all ages.
Frequently Asked Questions (Dermal Fillers)
Who will evaluate me during my Dermal Fillers appointment?
Dr. Wyse evaluate each patient to discuss specific areas of concern to that individual. Generally photographs of the patient’s face are taken so that the doctor and patient can review the specific goals of the patient looking at the photographs together.
Who administers dermal filler injections in the practice?
Dr. Wyse personally performs all dermal filler injections.
Is Dermal filler administration painful?
No, there is a slight sting or pressure sensation with injection, but we offer all patients numbing cream which we apply for several minutes prior to treatment. This makes the treatment very comfortable for most patients.
How long is recovery after Dermal fillers?
We ask that you not press or rub the treated area on the day of treatment and wait until the day after treatment to apply makeup. Otherwise there are no restrictions. Some patients do get mild bruising or slight swelling in the treated areas, but this is generally minimal and can be covered with make-up starting the day after treatment.
How quickly does Dermal filler work?
Effects are seen immediately after treatment. There can, however, be some very mild swelling or bruising after treatment depending upon the patient, so the final result is seen once these resolve.
What is Dermal filler made of and how does it work?
Our practice uses fillers made of only hyaluronic acid and local anesthetic (lidocaine). Hyaluronic acid is a colorless, natural substance that is normally made in our bodies and found in our skin. In the skin, hyaluronic acid delivers nutrients, helps the skin retain moisture and softness, and adds volume. As we age, our skin loses volume, causing wrinkles and sagging. By injecting dermal filler, we are replacing hyaluronic acid. Wrinkles are smoothed and volume is restored, recreating a more youthful contour to the curves of the face.
How long do the effects of Dermal filler last?
Effects last about 12 to 18 months depending upon the type of dermal filler used. Dr. Wyse can discuss this with you during your consultation. As dermal filler is absorbed by the body over time, there is some residual dermal filler and future treatments may not require as much product.
Which Dermal fillers are used and what are the differences between them?
Our practice uses Juvederm® Ultra XC, Juvederm® Ultra Plus XC, Juvederm Voluma® XC, Juvederm Vollure™ XC, and Juvederm Volbella® XC. These dermal fillers vary in their viscosity (thickness and how easily they spread). They also vary in how quickly they are absorbed by the body. The differing consistency of these products makes some more appropriate for certain areas of the face. In addition, the severity and depth of the wrinkles being treated may make one filler more appropriate than another.

Under the eyes- hollowing (tear troughs) under the eyes can be filled, bagginess can be smoothed, dark circles can be improved.
Cheeks- volume can be added to restore natural contour and soften irregularities
Nasolabial folds, the fold extending from the outer nose corner to the outer corner of the mouth, can be softened

Chin- volume can be added to provide a stronger profile
What are the side effects of Dermal fillers?
Most side effects are mild or moderate in nature, and their duration is short lasting (7 days or less). The most common side effects are bruising, swelling, and firmness and tenderness in the areas injected. Infection is very rare, but before treatment, your skin will be cleansed and antiseptic applied. Dr. Wyse will review side effects with you before treatment.
Is there anyone who should not have Dermal filler injections?
Dr. Wyse will review your medical history during the consultation. Patients with recent infections or very compromised immune systems should not have dermal filler injections until these issues are resolved. Patients on blood thinners may be treated, but may have a little more bruising. Patients who have a history of keloid scar formation (large elevated scars) are not ideal candidates, but this is assessed on an individual basis.
How much does Dermal filler treatment cost?
The cost of treatment depends on the amount and type of dermal filler used. This depends upon what areas of the face are treated, the anatomy of the individual, and the effect desired by the patient. During a consultation, Dr. Wyse will help the patient decide on a treatment plan and discuss the amount and type of dermal filler recommended.
